Choosing a Martial Art In Hornsby
Jiu-Jitsu or Judo?
Two grappling arts. One clear difference.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo share the same roots, but they take you to very different places. If you’re choosing between the two, here’s what actually matters, and why so many people in Hornsby make BJJ at SJJA their home.
Both BJJ and Judo are grappling-based martial arts with deep traditions and real-world applications, but they differ significantly in focus, training style, and what you’ll actually learn on the mat. This guide breaks down the key differences so you can make the right choice, whether you’re an adult looking for a new challenge or a parent choosing for your child.
What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
BJJ is a ground-based martial art built on one idea: technique beats size. It teaches you to control and submit an opponent using leverage, positioning, joint locks and chokes, regardless of how big they are.
It evolved from traditional Judo in early 20th century Brazil, where the Gracie family refined ground-fighting into a complete system. Today, BJJ is practised worldwide and is a cornerstone of modern mixed martial arts.
At SJJA Hornsby, your training is led by Coach Ryan Stewart, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with a kickboxing and taekwondo background, alongside Coach Ash. Ryan brings over two decades of martial arts experience and formal qualifications in fitness, massage and rehab. SJJA Hornsby is part of the national SJJA network founded by multi-time world champion Bruno Alves, giving our students the backing of a proven curriculum and a network of 30+ academies across Australia.
What Is Judo?
Judo is a Japanese martial art created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It emphasises standing throws, trips and takedowns, using your opponent’s momentum and balance against them. It became an Olympic sport in 1964 and remains one of the most widely practised martial arts in the world.
Judo does include some ground techniques (known as newaza), but competition rules limit time on the ground. The primary goal is to throw your opponent with force and control, and that’s where the focus stays.

BJJ vs Judo for Kids
Both martial arts are great for children. But as a parent, the practical differences matter.
Judo means learning to throw and be thrown from standing. While breakfalls are taught early, the impact can be intimidating for younger or smaller kids.
BJJ focuses on ground control, escapes and positional games. It’s physically engaging but lower impact, which many parents find reassuring. Children learn problem-solving on the mat, building confidence and resilience without aggressive striking or high-impact throws.
At SJJA, our kids program is grouped by age and experience. Our coaches create a safe, fun environment where kids develop discipline, confidence and a genuine love for training.
