Choosing a Martial Art In Hornsby

Jiu-Jitsu or Judo?

Two grappling arts. One clear difference.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo share the same roots, but they take you to very different places. If you’re choosing between the two, here’s what actually matters, and why so many people in Hornsby make BJJ at SJJA their home.

Both BJJ and Judo are grappling-based martial arts with deep traditions and real-world applications, but they differ significantly in focus, training style, and what you’ll actually learn on the mat. This guide breaks down the key differences so you can make the right choice, whether you’re an adult looking for a new challenge or a parent choosing for your child.

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

BJJ is a ground-based martial art built on one idea: technique beats size. It teaches you to control and submit an opponent using leverage, positioning, joint locks and chokes, regardless of how big they are.

It evolved from traditional Judo in early 20th century Brazil, where the Gracie family refined ground-fighting into a complete system. Today, BJJ is practised worldwide and is a cornerstone of modern mixed martial arts.

At SJJA Hornsby, your training is led by Coach Ryan Stewart, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with a kickboxing and taekwondo background, alongside Coach Ash. Ryan brings over two decades of martial arts experience and formal qualifications in fitness, massage and rehab. SJJA Hornsby is part of the national SJJA network founded by multi-time world champion Bruno Alves, giving our students the backing of a proven curriculum and a network of 30+ academies across Australia.

What Is Judo?

Judo is a Japanese martial art created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It emphasises standing throws, trips and takedowns, using your opponent’s momentum and balance against them. It became an Olympic sport in 1964 and remains one of the most widely practised martial arts in the world.

Judo does include some ground techniques (known as newaza), but competition rules limit time on the ground. The primary goal is to throw your opponent with force and control, and that’s where the focus stays.

Key Differences: BJJ vs Judo

Where the Action Happens
Judo lives on your feet: gripping, off-balancing, throwing. BJJ lives on the ground: controlling, transitioning, submitting. A BJJ match can spend the entire round on the ground, and that’s where the depth of the art lives.

Self-Defence
Most real confrontations end up on the ground. BJJ gives you the tools to control the situation from any position. Judo’s throws can be effective, but they require specific grips that may not be available in a real scenario.

Long-Term Impact on Your Body
Judo’s repeated throws and breakfalls take a toll on shoulders, knees and the spine over time. BJJ is lower impact, ground-based training means less jarring force on joints. Many older Judo practitioners transition to BJJ for this reason.

Learning Curve
BJJ has a gentler on-ramp for adults starting from zero. You can learn fundamental positions and escapes from day one, without needing to learn how to fall safely from throws first.

Belt Progression
BJJ is known for rigorous standards. A blue belt takes 1-2 years. A black belt can take 8-12 years. Each belt genuinely represents a leap in skill, and that structured pathway keeps people motivated and training for the long haul.

Longevity
BJJ is a martial art you can practise well into your 40s, 50s and beyond. The ground-based nature makes it more sustainable than the repeated impact of Judo training.

BJJ vs Judo for Kids

Both martial arts are great for children. But as a parent, the practical differences matter.

Judo means learning to throw and be thrown from standing. While breakfalls are taught early, the impact can be intimidating for younger or smaller kids.

BJJ focuses on ground control, escapes and positional games. It’s physically engaging but lower impact, which many parents find reassuring. Children learn problem-solving on the mat, building confidence and resilience without aggressive striking or high-impact throws.

At SJJA, our kids program is grouped by age and experience. Our coaches create a safe, fun environment where kids develop discipline, confidence and a genuine love for training.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between Jiu-Jitsu and Judo?
Judo focuses on standing throws and takedowns. BJJ focuses on ground control, positioning and submissions. BJJ teaches you what to do after a takedown, which is where most real confrontations end up.
Is Jiu-Jitsu or Judo better for self-defence?
BJJ is widely considered more practical. Most confrontations end up on the ground, and BJJ teaches you to control and neutralise an opponent from that position using technique and leverage rather than strength.
Can I start BJJ with no martial arts experience?
Absolutely. Most students at SJJA begin with no prior experience. Our Fundamentals program is specifically designed for complete beginners.
Is Jiu-Jitsu or Judo better for kids?
Both are excellent, but BJJ offers a gentler introduction because the focus is on controlled ground techniques rather than high-impact throws. At SJJA, our kids program builds confidence, discipline and resilience through age-appropriate training.
Is BJJ harder on the body than Judo?
BJJ is generally easier on the body long-term. Judo involves repeated high-impact throws and falls. BJJ is primarily ground-based, making it more sustainable for people of all ages.
Where can I try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Sydney?
SJJA Hornsby offers a free trial class for both kids and adults. We’re located at 2/104 George Street, Hornsby (entry via Hunter Lane), minutes from Hornsby Station and easily accessible from Wahroonga, Waitara, Asquith, Thornleigh, Pennant Hills and the wider Hornsby Shire.
